The brain plasticity - What is it?

Well, what is brain plasticity and what that has to do with me, or you or everyone? You better read 'The brain that changes itself' by Dr Norman Doidge. Form  there, I've learned enormously. Then I fine this video and it's worth your attention. There are many more. if you want to keep your brain younger and prevent Alzeimer, surely you'd like to know more about your brain.

Week 6 - Slide Shows, Screen Casting and Digital Story Telling

What interesting ? Screencasting and digital story telling. I didn't know about all those although I do slide shows from time to time and use it from some sources, such as google slide show and slideshow.

The good thing about screencasting and digital story telling is you can be a producer easily. The softwares are there and not hard to try. I'll make some screencasting by using my own writing and pictures in Christmas holdiay.

It should be fun.

Week 5 - Ning

I've joined Public library group at Ning. It hasn't taken high member yet.
First I heard about Ning was a while back. I looked up Mosman's online group and quite interested in it. I know by then that Ning is a social network that allows you to have a social network within Ning.
I always think Ning is pretty good for online reading group/book club. So Mosman library has provided an example.

After I've joined the public library group I find it's practically quite easy but it takes while for a group to get attention, same as some other library 2.0 groups. For a reading group probably mostly would be for middle or younger age population? not so sure. Because talking about age, I'm not that young either. So no bias.
I'll start a reading group on Ning next year for the library, promise myself - it's the plan!
One last word - I don't know how others to cope with the amount of information from amount of social networking. I struggle with my very limited time.

Week 4: Evaluation

I haven't really thought about evaluation of my own blog since I almost stopped to write anything on it and didn't care about it any more.
I reckon I got a bad name for URL. It's poetic but hardly is searchable from google, unless it's known beforehand.
Some sites that I have blog with that actually have build-in stats. That means I don't need to set up anything to find how many times a particular post is reviewed. However it's very important for a library to analyzis and review how their website goes and make up more beautifully.
Free online survey tool is very useful, like survey monkey.
I did subscribe feedburner and it's not hard to use. After all, most of tools have similar way getting around. If one is familiar with one tool and it would not take long to get know the other apps.

Week 3: Delicious - bookmark

I've got this delicious account for a while and now I've linked delicious to twitter. I've also made a link here while I got a html code from delicious and added a gadget on this blog site. It all works well.
I always like to share info with others, especially those info that I think it's relevant to our professional knowledge and personal development. Since my of my colleagues are not on twitter or delicious I still use ancient ways such as print out it and post it on the kitchen wall, or send an email around, to share new ideas.
While we re think how to improve our services, or for example, how to make ourselves more relevant on info services, delicious can bookmark info readily available for public. Reference service is now really in pain since hardly anyone would come to library ask question. So apart from answer boards that library can develop how about use delicious to bookmarks some info regularly for public access? The one's like the state library of NSW? Or we can use it for staff self learning? At least it's more reliable. Don't know if it's possible or not but just a thought.

Week 2: Twitter or not?

Twitter has become a such popular site and most famous people are using it, to further enhance their popularity I reckon.
It's very good for a library to make bigger publicity of course. Since it's only 140 characters are allowed on one post- it's more like a computer version of instant message. It would certainly attract a quick read for coming event, for example.
Same as other web 2.0 tools, to twitter or not, mostly is determined by how we use it and why we use it. Since local councils are now more relaxed about this issue we've seen more and more contents from local government are on all sort of sites. The question now is how a library is to coordinate with media department and to do it properly.
Personally I don't think I would be a tweeter. I've made my delicious to twitter sites, that's it. But I do followed some people and want to see what useful info I can get from them.

Week 1 Refreshing

I decided to make my new learning on ofmerebeing2.

I've developed another blog on the same account. You know you can easily doing so.
Then I actually searched my own photos that were posted on Picasa. I wanted a green color. I don't know why when I read 'refreshing', I instantly associated it with color green. So the photo of trees around a lake was chosen, a photo of my own.

The next step I used 'bighugelabs' to custmise my photo into a blog head. I also selected few gadgets that I liked, such as 'my links' that links my first version of ofmerebeing, a link to Parra Reads (well, it's a library blog that ran by me).

Of course I wanted to show some beautiful photos taken by my friends, so came the slides. Adding one more photo taken by mobile - Leura Garden Festival was also done easily.

I'll develop more gadget, but only if necessary. I don't like a blog makes people dizzy because you want to put everything on. I want it looks clear and 'refreshing'.

I didn't stopped blogging since I fished library 2.0 course in April 2008. I started blogging before the learning program. I have so many friends in China and the best way to know what we're doing and how are we doing is we all go to blog.

1st I got one at blogspot but hardly any of my friends were on it. So later I changed it for the first learning program. (I still update it from time to time). I set up a blog at yahoo.cn. And I soon developed a new one on sohu, a biggest website in China. Most of my friends then all have started blogging. I've got so much info from them. We read others post and comment on it. The best outcome of that is I've made a lot new friends. Well, they are not entirely new but a little complicated than this.

Thirty some years ago, during the cultural revolution, we were all sent to a farm - Yellow Mts Tea and Forest Farm. Of course when I went there, a lot of them had already come back to city. We never met at the time over there. We only found one another by social networking. That's why I say they're not new friends but old friends, who I've never met personally (not every now) but we all drunk the water from the same creek and climbed the same mountain at the time.

Those friends are few years older than me, but they've done great jobs on their blogs. They post videos, photos and write great deal of articles about everything, virtually. They go back visit the Farm that no longer exist but the Mts and places that still has our youth spirit there. Then they post everything onto their blogs for people like me who never have a chance to visit there to re cherish our memories.

What I've learnt along the way is that there are virtually millions things you can do on a blog. You can be a very sophisticated web designer after a while. You can learn from everyone on how to smash, and mash up things, like photos, videos and audios, as long as you'd like to learn, as long as you are motivated.

I usually go to my personal blog once a week, read few others, and write my own. If I'm in a mood I write a few articles in one day. I hardly write things about myself, but basically only articles in certain topics. By the way I'm a writer, a little bit above average in my mother tongue.

This year, I've developed a blog for the library which I blog at least once a week. There is a limitation there as I don't have the highest control of the blog after the council has taken over the control, but I'm still able to do a lot on it. The council has allowed us to use other social media, such as youtube, flickr and twitter as long as we stick on the protocol. So the library blog has posts, photos, and videos as well. We have some plans and hope we'll be able to do more. Now there is at least over 100 people view the library blog everyday average, the highest time was 880 viewers per a day.

So that keeps me going.

This site is my continuous learning of library 2.0, no, library 2.1. I call it My 2.1. I open up a new site away from my 1st version of 'ofmerebeing' to ofmerebeing2. There is nothing wrong about the 1st version blog. On the contrary, it's quite interesting, if you ask me. But I want to stay focused.
